Explaining Tai Sui (太岁)
Explaining Tai Sui (太岁)
JANUARY 15, 2024 | IN LIVING SPACE | BY MASTER SHERWIN
The heavy-weight star of each year is known as Grand Duke of Jupiter, aka Tai Sui (hanyu pinyin pronunciation). In Chinese, it is written as 太岁.
This star has such a grand title because of its huge significance. Imagine that the Prime Minister is visiting your house. Will you be at ease at home as always or extremely nervous with both fear and excitement? This tension and increased stress is what we commonly termed Tai Sui Affliction (犯太岁 ). However, as you can see from this analogy, having this star in your house is not always a bad thing.
Tai Sui is not just a myth or superstition. These cosmic giant planets and stars may be eons away but their energy is powerful enough to influence our lives in one way or another.
Why Jupiter?
Ancient Chinese astronomers observed that the orbit of Jupiter is about 12 years. This meant they knew it had ended up in the same spot in the sky at the same time as 12 years ago.
The concept of 12 zodiac signs, aka animal signs and also known as earthy branches, is based on the path of Jupiter in the night sky and its orbit. Jupiter will be directly facing one of the signs every year. In this case, the sign that is directly opposite Jupiter is what we commonly called Direct Clash with Tai Sui (冲太岁 ).
There are 5 different types of afflictions with Tai Sui according to the position of Jupiter relative to each zodiac sign. For 2024 Year of the Wood Dragon, these are the respective zodiac signs with Tai Sui afflictions:
1) 刑 punitive - Dragon
2)冲 clash - Dog
3)破 destruction - Ox
4)害 harm - Rabbit
5)犯 conflict - Dragon
Appeasing the Tai Sui?
First and foremost, the sector of the house where Tai Sui resides should be left as undisturbed as possible. Do not start renovation in this area of your house unnecessarily. If this sector is disturbed, it can cause the destabilization of Tai Sui, which is commonly known as a Chinese idom, 在太岁头上动土. It is an ominous sign of misfortune. The exact sector is at 112.5° – 127.5° South-East, taking reference from the centre of your house.
The most common remedy is to pray to Tai Sui for safety and fewer obstacles in temples after Li Chun (4th Feb 2024 3.22pm) has arrived. In Tibetan buddhist temple, you can pray to Lord Kalachakra to achieve harmony and peace for the year ahead.
Another way to keep Tai Sui under control is with an accessory that contains Tai Sui amulet. This can be brought along wherever you are.
Having afflictions with Tai Sui is not always 100% negative. In fact, it can turn out to be something positive. The clash can create the opportunity to have a breakthrough in life by eliminating the obstacles present as deciphered from your Bazi chart. Consult an accomplished Feng Shui practitioner for a Bazi analysis to make the best of Tai Sui affliction. Have your strategy ready rather than just sit and wait for things to happen, which is likely outside your control where and when.
